The Logic of Nature for Pet Food Nutrition

In nature, dogs and cats are meat-eating predators, or what scientists call carnivores. Cats are called “obligate carnivores,” which means their diet must consist primarily of meat. When wild dogs or cats consume their prey, often plant-eating animals or “herbivores,” they eat the entire animal, including hair, bones, entrails, blood, stomach contents, etc. By consuming their prey’s stomach and intestinal contents, which are partially digested plant materials, natural carnivores also obtain some additional essential nutrients available only from plants.

Nature’s Logic® pet foods are formulated the way a truly natural diet should be. We never use man-made, chemically-synthesized vitamins, minerals, or amino acids. Nature’s Logic® 100% natural pet foods are made primarily of meats and other high-quality protein sources, combined with carefully selected plant products to naturally provide the essential nutrition your pet needs to thrive.

High Protein Content and Quality

For your natural carnivore, Nature’s Logic® foods are rich in protein, derived from beef, chicken, duck, lamb, fish, venison, and rabbit. Our foods range in dry matter protein content from 31.5% to 51.69%, depending upon the specific product, and exceed the AAFCO* Nutrient Profiles for all essential amino acids. We offer various protein formulas, making it easy to rotate your pet’s diet to avoid developing allergies to any specific protein. Nature’s Logic® uses high-quality proteins and fats obtained predominantly from animal sources, just as dogs and cats would naturally consume these nutrients in the wild.

All Nature’s Logic® formulas also contain another natural ingredient that is fundamental to a healthy carnivore diet: Plasma. Plasma, or the white cells from whole blood, comes from meat, poultry, or fish and is rich in albumin and globulin proteins. Plasma is also a natural source of iron, sodium, chloride, potassium, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, numerous vitamins, and over 18 amino acids. Nature’s Logic® Raw Frozen diets naturally contain plasma, and we add a highly palatable porcine plasma to our canned and dry kibble formulas after cooking. Research has shown this product increases palatability of food, reduces stool volume due to increased digestibility, improves stool quality versus control diets, significantly improves fiber and phosphorus digestion, and enhances immunity. Life does not exist without blood and the nutrients it provides to carnivores.

Another source of high-quality protein used in Nature’s Logic® Dry Kibble formulas is meal derived from beef, chicken, duck, lamb, fish, venison, and rabbit. Using dried meal, instead of fresh or frozen protein sources, results in a higher final protein content in our dry foods. According to AAFCO*, pet food ingredients are listed on labels by the weight of the initial components used, not the final weight after cooking. But added fresh meat or poultry containing 50% to 60% water, loses 90% of its water weight in the dryer during production, significantly altering the final content of the added fresh protein sources. Nature’s Logic achieves high protein content in its kibble, without adding synthetic amino acids, by using dried forms of quality meats, poultry and fish from the beginning of the dry food production process.

100% Natural Food Ingredients Provide Essential Vitamins & Minerals

Nature’s Logic® is committed to providing all the nutrients a healthy pet needs, and doing it with 100% natural ingredients. The essential vitamins, minerals and other trace nutrients in our foods come from fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and other natural food ingredients. We never add chemically synthesized vitamins, minerals or other artificial nutrients. Nature’s Logic® provides complete and balanced nutrition for your pet by using food, not chemicals.

Probiotics & Enzymes Support Healthy Digestion

Your pet’s digestion is essential to his overall health. Good digestion has been linked to a strong immune system, healthy skin and coat, fewer allergies, a reduction in hairballs, as well as less gas and waste. Whole food ingredients, like those used to make Nature’s Logic® foods, naturally contain probiotics and enzymes to help pets maintain good digestive health.

Probiotics are beneficial bacteria normally present in your pet’s digestive system. Maintaining strong levels of these naturally occurring microorganisms help reduce the potential for diseases caused by pathogens, or bad bacteria. These positive effects of probiotics on both humans and animals have been well documented for over thirty years.

Enzymes aid in digestion by helping your pet utilize more of the nutrients from his food. Nature’s Logic® uses a multi-enzyme blend of plant-based enzymes that includes proteases to digest protein, amylases to digest starch, cellulases to break down fibrous foods, and lipases to digest fats. This proprietary enzyme blend is specially formulated to support the digestive system of dogs and cats on high animal-protein diets.

Note: Because probiotics and enzymes are temperature sensitive, Nature’s Logic® has added them to our Dry Kibble, All Food Fortifier, and Canine Treats after the cooking process is complete. Further, the probiotics we use are microencapsulated, to ensure they remain viable and active when they reach your pet’s bowl.

Protein & Fat (High Quality Animal Sources )

Nature’s Logic® uses high-quality proteins and fats obtained predominantly from animal sources, just as dogs and cats would naturally consume these nutrients in the wild. Our beef, chicken, duck, lamb, fish, venison, and rabbit come from human-edible processing plants and are simply the surplus not sold to supermarkets during the daily production cycle. The lamb, venison, and beef sources are all grass-fed. The chicken, duck, and rabbit sources are commercially-raised for human consumption and are fed vegetarian diets. They are antibiotic and hormone-free.

Since our foods are made from high levels of animal protein, all Nature’s Logic® diets naturally contain sufficient levels of the Omega-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). They also exceed AAFCO*’s protein amino acid requirements for arginine, histidine, isoleucine leucine, lysine, methionine-cystine, methionine, phenylalanine-tyrosine, phylalanine, taurine, threonine, tryptophan, and valine.

Meal (Nutrient-Dense Protein)

“Meal” is just a dried form of the protein source used to create it. This is why meals have higher protein by weight than fresh meats…the water has been removed. Nature’s Logic® meals are just dried versions of the high-quality protein sources that go into our foods: Clean muscle meat, which can contain the skin and bone for calcium and other nutrients, but with NO internal organs, feathers, feet, heads, etc. The meats and poultry we use in our meal come straight from the human-edible processing plants.

Plasma (Natural Food Ingredient)

No life exists without blood, and the nutrients it provides to carnivorous animals are essential. Carnivores in the wild routinely consume the blood of prey animals. The animal blood is as natural a part of a carnivore’s diet as the meat and bone consumed from prey. It is an important natural food ingredient. Plasma supplies iron, sodium, chloride, potassium, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, numerous vitamins, and over 18 amino acids. These nutrients found naturally in animal blood plasma play a large role in creating a safer and more natural diet for pets. The inclusion of porcine plasma is one reason Nature’s Logic® does NOT need to add any chemically-synthesized vitamins, minerals, or other nutrients to our formulas.

Millet (Carnivore-appropriate Starch)

Dry pet food contains a form of either grain or other starchy ingredient, not because of the nutritional value, but because it makes the kibble stick together and hold its shape. Grain-free manufacturers are migrating from potato, to tapioca, to peas and chick peas in an effort to find unique ingredients they can claim are better. Instead, in our dry food, we use millet, a grain that is low in natural sugar and carbohydrates, gluten-free, and carnivore-appropriate.

Millet is a grass seed, similar to one a carnivore in the wild might consume from eating the stomach of a bird or herbivore. It is much more likely to occur naturally in a wild dog or cat’s diet so will be more familiar to their digestive systems. Nature’s Logic foods contain NO gluten, corn, wheat, rice, soy, tapioca, peas, or potatoes.

Fruits, Vegetables, Nuts & Seeds (Natural Vitamins & Minerals )

Nature’s Logic® is the only full-line of raw, canned and frozen commercial pet food with no chemically-synthesized nutrients. All of the vitamins and minerals in our formulas are derived from food. This is the safest way to supply nutrients to pets. Here are the whole food ingredients we use to naturally supply pets with essential nutrients:

Probiotics, Prebiotics & Digestive Enzymes

Probiotics are naturally-present bacteria that reside in every pet’s normal, healthy digestive system. By competing for space and nutrients with the organisms that can make pets sick, these healthy microorganisms keep any pathogens present in check. Probiotics also support the absorption of nutrients and contribute to a healthy immune response. Nature’s Logic uses a probiotic blend chosen to complement one another and work harmoniously, for the maximum benefit:

  • Dried Lactobacillus Acidophilus Fermentation Product
  • Dried Lactobacillus Casei Fermentation Product
  • Dried Bifidobacterium Bifidium Fermentation Product
  • Dried Enterococcus Faecium Fermentation Product
  • Dried Bacillus Coagulans Fermentation Product

Nature’s Logic uses probiotics developed using a proprietary process that creates strains that grow and multiply in higher temperatures. These thermo- positive probiotics remain viable for up to two years, without refrigeration.

Prebiotics are substances that selectively help the naturally-present bacteria (probiotics) to flourish, increasing their benefits on digestive health. Nature’s Logic foods contain chicory as a prebiotic. Its active compound, inulin, has been shown to stimulate the growth of bifidobacteria, which are regarded as beneficial strains in the colon.

Enzymes are proteins naturally present throughout all healthy bodies. Enzymes speed up various processes carried out by cells in the body. Certain enzymes are required to digest the different types of foods pets eat. Proteases digest proteins, amylases digest starches, cellulases break down fibrous foods, and lipases digest fats. Natures Logic uses a proprietary blend of these four enzymes, specially formulated to support the digestive system of dogs and cats eating the high animal-protein diets formulated for natural carnivores.

  • Dried Aspergillus Niger Fermentation Extract
  • Dried Aspergillus Oryzae Fermentation Extract

Activated by Moisture

Dry pet food has very low water content. It is baked to reduce moisture which allows the food to stay fresh without refrigeration. The probiotics and enzymes have also been dehydrated and processed in a manner to ensure activity. Inside the bag of dry pet food, they are stable but inactive. When they come into contact with saliva and the moisture of the cat or dog’s gastrointestinal tract, they are rehydrated and begin their beneficial roles in aiding digestion. They only become active when they come in contact with moisture.

Added After Heat

These specially-prepared probiotics and enzymes are applied to the dry pet food after the heat and drying steps. This ensures that they remain viable and active when pets eat the foods containing them. They remain dormant until the right conditions are present for them to activate. The dried enzymes need moisture to become active, while probiotics require a source of food, optimal temperature and pH, as well as moisture to grow.

Montmorillonite (Natural Alternative)

Montmorillonite clay is used in some natural pet foods as a natural anti-caking agent. It allows high-quality pet foods to remain free of man-made and chemical agents for this purpose. In addition, it is a natural source of minerals so it may bring with it added health benefits to pets. Since montmorillonite clay comes from the earth, some customers have asked about contamination by dioxin. Nature’s Logic® purchases its clay from a supplier whose product has been tested and shown to contain no dioxin.

Natural Preservative

Nature’s Logic® uses Mixed Tocopherols, a natural antioxidant preservative naturally derived from vegetable oil with no chemical processes.

Manufactured in the USA and Tested

Nature’s Logic® avoids potential quality and contamination problems in two key ways. First, we either directly purchase or approve the sources of all our ingredients. Second, we use meats, poultry, fish, fruits, and vegetables that come from human-edible processing facilities. All our manufacturing plants are registered with the US Department of Agriculture and the Food and Drug Administration. They are all AIB Certified and several are EU (European Union) Certified.

Even though the meats, poultry, fruits, and vegetables used in Nature’s Logic® foods come from human edible processing plants, we cannot say our dog and cat food is good for human consumption because it has been made in a pet food manufacturing plant. Unless the food is made in a human food manufacturing facility, no pet food manufacturer can legally make that claim.

Locations of Nature’s Logic Manufacturing Facilities
  • Dry Kibble, Mt. Pleasant, Texas, USA
  • Canned Formulas, Emporia, Kansas, USA
  • Raw Food, Lincoln, Nebraska, USA
  • Supplements, St. Joseph, Missouri, USA

Nature’s Logic® also tests every batch of food to ensure that it meets our specifications. In addition, our ingredients and finished foods are tested to ensure there are no harmful bacteria, like Salmonella or E. coli, which have been the reason for most pet food recalls that have occurred over the past ten years. We also test for potential rancidity, aflatoxins, and vomitoxins. The company has also done random testing for fluoride.
